Vacation Journal, Day 5 - Barcelona in Half a Day

We woke up very early in the morning and headed to the airport to catch a plane to Barcelona. While planning the trip, I discovered that in our situation, air travel was significantly (read: hundreds of dollars) cheaper than by train. I was a little disappointed that we did not get to try the high-speed train, but we were on a tight schedule and I am cheap. We paid $87 for both of us to fly round trip from Madrid to Barcelona on SpanAir. I was a little afraid of what we might get, but the planes were just fine and we were each able (actually, required) to check a bag for free. Our friend Brandon picked us up at the Barcelona airport and took us on a whirlwind tour of the city before driving us to Andorra La Vella, where he, his wife Lauren and daughter Addison live.
Although I spent much of the ride holding on for dear life, I managed to get some photos of the scenery as Brandon drove (sped) us through Barcelona. Here are some of my favorites:

Our first order of business after the car tour was a snack -- at McDonald's. Because I have officially eaten at McDonald's in Spain more than in the US in the last two years, you think I would be ashamed about this. You, however, have never had the delicious ice cream and espresso treat that I enjoyed in Barcelona. It was delicious.

After the treat, we headed to the Sagrada Familia, a Catholic monument and church. Actually, this was no ordinary monument, because we could see it from miles away. I have never seen anything quite like it. This massive project was started in 1883 by Gaudi, is still under major construction, and is not predicted to be complete until 2026. There was a lot of construction going on while we were there, and the pictures do not do it justice. Our time in Barcelona was short, but we got enough of a taste of the city that we know we would like to go back again someday, preferably in the summer so that we can enjoy the beaches. We made our way by car from Barcelona to Andorra, where had a great lunch and caught up with our friends. Brandon, Lauren and Addison live in Andorra because Brandon plays for Andorra La Vella's professional basketball team, so we stopped by his evening practice before heading off to bed.
