Favorite Things #2: Road ID

Do you ever run alone? Do you ever run on the roads? Do you run or do any other type of exercise outdoors?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you need to get yourself a
Road ID.

For around $20, you literally wear life-saving information on your wrist (or shoe, or ankle). I ran for a long time all alone without any identification. Had I been injured or passed out on the road or trail and someone came along, I definitely would have been a “Jane Doe.” Frankly, even if I were out running with a friend, it is unlikely that the friend would know my husband’s contact information or my drug allergies.

The Road ID changes all of that, especially the interactive version. My wrist ID lists my full name, along with my city and state, as well as an 800-number and website for first responders’ use. A first responder or hospital can call the number or visit the website, enter the unique serial number on the back of the id, and obtain all sorts of information. On your own unique website linked to your id, you can list your insurance company, physicians, blood type, drug allergies, medical history, five contacts, and much more. I even uploaded a photo.

I wear my Road ID every time I run, even in races. Yes, it is unlikely that you will be run over by a car while running, but why worry? The Road ID is a smart and economic way to identify yourself while you are out on the road.
