“. . . I am training for a marathon . . . I am training for a marathon . . .”
That’s the sound of me reminding myself that the marathon is only six weeks away. You would not know by my behavior that the race is coming up so soon. I ran two miles last week. That’s right, two miles! That is completely unacceptable. I have a million excuses – I was out of town for two days for work, I was tired, and we went to Amarillo for three days. Whatever the excuses, running two miles in a week is not going to work. I missed my 18-miler. David got in 16 miles on Saturday, but I used the excuse that it was cold rainy so that I could stay home. I am officially behind and feeling awfully guilty about it.
Fortunately (and not surprisingly – we’re all creatures of habit, right?) this happened to me before the White Rock Marathon last December. Around the time I was supposed to “dig deep” and run long, I decided to change jobs and move in a period of a month. However, I tweaked my schedule, got in a twenty-miler a few weeks before the race, and I was fine. I was fine, but I was not fast. I knew I was not in prime form in that race, but I was hoping to be in prime form for this one. Now that I have missed an important long run and I haven’t been putting in my time lifting weights at the gym, I probably won’t be in prime form in San Diego, either.
Now I just have to be thankful that I have six weeks left to train, and I plan on tweaking my schedule just a little to accommodate my (big) slip-up last week. At least I have only slipped up on one big run and I have adequate time to train enough to finish the race. Now, my long runs look like this:
April 19th: 18 miles
April 26th: OKC Memorial Half Marathon
May 3rd: Heels & Hills Half Marathon
May 10th: 20 miles
May 17th: 12 miles
May 24th: 9 miles
May 31st: San Diego Marathon
Surely I can suck it up for 6 more weeks of training! Thank goodness I have two races to motivate me to run!
Maybe, just maybe, the San Diego weather will cooperate on May 31st and I can set a personal record (beating 4 hours, 54 minutes) in the marathon. If not, I will allow myself to be proud that I stuck with it and finished my second marathon while watching David finish his first. Actually, he’ll finish before me and watch me finish my second, but you know what I mean.

You have been doing an awful lot of running and racing girl; I'm glad you relaxed a week. You have a plan to get back on track--you'll do great!
