Girls' and Boys' Weekend

This weekend, I had a “staycation” in Dallas with friends. My friend Mindi flew in from Amarillo and we met up with Mindi’s sister, Lori, and her friend Steph. We’ve all traveled together for races before and had a good time, so we planned a little girls’ getaway.

The weekend started with food (as it so often does for me) – a great meal at Pappasitos. We had some good laughs as our waiter, who so often harassed me while I was waiting for the other ladies to arrive at the restaurant, was no where to be found after our food was delivered. Mindi played the job of waitress, fetching more tortillas and some water. After a fight over who was paying for dinner, we made our way back to the hotel, where Mindi insisted that Lori watch Legally Blonde before going to bed.

Lori needed to see Legally Blonde, you see, because Saturday’s plan was to see Legally Blonde the Musical. Before the musical, though, we got in a quick workout, a great breakfast at Corner Bakery, and some serious shopping. After visiting a Walgreens in a somewhat (read – very) questionable part of town for a snack, we saw the musical. I did not know what to expect, but it was really cute. The songs were catchy and fun, but if I wake up to “Omigod You Guys” playing in my head one more time, I might just go crazy.

After the musical, we hit a few more stores and had dinner at Maggiano’s Little Italy. We had a great meal, and the dinner conversation regarding pregnancy and post-pregnancy issues provided ample birth control for me for at least the next year. People don’t talk much about all these things, but I wish they’d hand out a pamphlet with all this information to teenage girls. That stuff might, in and of itself, decrease the teen pregnancy rate by 50% or more.
Since “shopping and musicals” sounds like David’s private version of hell, he and our dog Finn took off to Amarillo. They picked up Mindi’s husband Jonathan and headed to Angel Fire. While in New Mexico, they fished, climbed Wheeler Peak, and ate lots of green chiles with David’s grandpa. Finn managed to get her first summit on Wheeler Peak, which is more than I have ever accomplished.

We both had a good weekend with great friends, and I hope we can take the time to do things like this more often. However, I am looking forward to spending some time at home for a while before our travels pick up again.

  1. Sounds like you both had a great weekend. GO FINN!!! I'm so proud of her. She looks kind of worn out in the picture with David, though!
