San Diego Trip Report - Day 3

Saturday in San Diego was very relaxing! Our day started off with breakfast at a place called Hash House A Go Go. I love eating a big breakfast, especially on vacation. When I say “big” breakfast, I mean BIG. This place did not let me down. David ordered Eggs Benedict that came out on a plate that looked like one of the serving platters we have at the house. I have never seen a biscuit so big! The Eggs Benedict was made with roasted chicken, lots of veggies and an awesome, rich sauce. I ordered scrambled eggs with avocado, sun dried tomatoes, Swiss cheese, and onions. I am guessing they used about 8 eggs to make my dish, which also included a huge biscuit (served with homemade rhubarb-raspberry jam) and crispy potatoes. Needless to say, we were stuffed, skipped the fish tacos we planned on eating for lunch, and didn’t eat another bite until dinner.

After breakfast, we made our way out to Point Loma to visit the Cabrillo National Monument. We visited the tide pool, where we climbed over rocks looking for all different kinds of sea creatures, including crabs and sea anemones. We looked for starfish, but we never found one. After exploring for a while, we went to the Visitor Center at the monument. On a clear, sunny day, the view is supposed to be fantastic. Unfortunately, it was cloudy and foggy, so we didn’t get to see much. Despite the bad view, we are glad we visited.

We returned to the hotel after visiting the momument so we could rest and relax and get everything ready for Sunday morning’s marathon. After a nap (that huge breakfast made us tired), we walked to Ralph’s grocery store to pick up bagels, bananas, honey, peanut butter and Gatorade for our pre-marathon breakfast. I’ve never heard of Ralph’s, but David insisted we go there since it is mentioned several times in The Big Lebowski. Funny boy.

We got dressed and headed to Coronado Island. We drove around the island, and did a drive-by of the Hotel Del Coronado. It looks like an awesome place to stay, but I cannot bring myself to pay over $300 per night to stay anywhere, even a historic hotel like that. We took some photos of downtown San Diego before heading to dinner at an Italian restaurant. I picked the restaurant because the reviews said it had beautiful views of downtown San Diego. They were right! The picture windows overlooked downtown, and it was gorgeous. I had a great dish of homemade ravioli stuffed with cheeses and Italian sausage topped with a spicy tomato sauce and David had some delicious Cannelloni.

After dinner, we headed back to the hotel to turn in early. We set the alarm for 3:30 a.m. (thank goodness that’s 5:30 a.m. in Texas) and hit the hay.
