We have been planning on participating in several races this year, but following the loss of Brennan, we’ve been planning even more. It is hard to be home when he’s not there, and maybe we are just trying to avoid thinking about how sad we are. Rather than sit around and mope (to be honest, this is what I end up doing when I am at home these days), we have decided to book a full schedule of races. A full schedule of races means a full schedule of training, which means we are busy and can take our minds off (or at least run through) the sadness we feel after losing Brennan.
Here’s our racing schedule through the first weekend in April:
March 14-15
The races begin this Saturday, March 14th, when David will compete in a sprint triathlon in Athens, Texas. I am going to go to the triathlon with him as the “official photographer and 5K coach.” This means I will take lots of photos of him swimming and biking and then run with him and motivate him (read: yell at him) to finish. It should be a lot of fun, other than the fact that we have to leave our house at 5:00 a.m. to make it to the start in time.
Our next race is Sunday, March 15th. We’ll be running in the Fort Worth Runner’s Club “Lucky 7” seven mile run for St. Patrick’s Day. I am especially excited about this one, because we’ve missed the last two club races and I am ready to meet some other runners in our community.
March 21
Next up is the Grasslands Half Marathon. David convinced me to do this one, and I am a little nervous. I haven’t done any trail runs since we moved to Fort Worth, so this will be interesting. I am looking to get in a long run on the 21st, so this is a way to do it. Trail runs are always fun and different, too, so it should be a good time.
April 4-5
We are taking the weekend of March 28-29 off (not from training, but from racing), but we’ll be back at it again on April 4 and 5. This time, we’re picking up my sister and brother-in-law from the DFW airport (they are arriving from their European vacation) and traveling to their hometown of Oklahoma City, where we will compete in the Redbud Classic. David and Brett are riding in Saturday’s bike race, and David, Adrian and I will run in the 5K or 10K on Sunday.
My biggest concern with all of this racing is the number of NCAA tournament games it may cause me to miss. I will be doing some serious deleting of recorded programs on our DVR so that I can record the games. Here’s hoping that our Aggies make the tournament!

Glad you are doing something healthy while you process your loss. I cannot believe the basketball you are going to miss though!
ReplyDeleteI hope you're using the term "hometown" loosely when referring to OKC. :) Just kidding! I'm so excited about getting to see you race again in OKC. I'm looking forward to seeing you this weekend too!!!
